Q & A
Fly fishing in Nagoya (Aichi Pref.) and Gifu Pref.
(November 20th, 2001)

Mr. X
I am hoping to begin teaching English in Nagoya or the Gifu prefecture next year. I was curious about the fly fishing in these areas. I was especially curious about salt water fishing in Nagoya. Are there rivers or streams that have spawning salmon? Any information you could provide me with would be very helpful.

Hello,
Gifu Pref. is the hottest area in Japan. There are the big river that the Japanese Alps (3000m) are the source and many tributaries are a very wonderful mountain stream. It is Nagara-gawa Riv, Kiso-gawa Riv. etc. Iwana and Amago are inhabiting.
And there is the Jinzuu-gawa Riv. in north and this flows in the Sea of Japan. Iwana and Yamame are inhabiting. Takahara-gawa Riv. that I am liking is one of a tributary.

And Aichi Pref. is a neighbour and Nagoya is in an estuary. If it is Aichi Pref. inside it may be Kansa-gawa Riv. and Yahagi-gawa Riv. Large mouse Bass is able to angle in Lake Biwa-ko.

These are the range in one hour by a car from Nagoya. (The north of Gifu is a little far.)

As for in Gifu Pref. the opening is early most most in Japan. It is February 1st. I go to the Nagara-gawa Riv. in February every year. Although snow and be cold Shirame (Amago) does Rise! It is very enjoyable with the sensitive fishing by midge (#20-#26, 8x-10x!).

Satsuki-masu (sea run Amago) is in Nagara-gawa Riv. and Kiso-gawa Riv. And there is the river that the cherry salmon is able to angle if it is a Sea of Japan side. Yet these are a minority and be rare to be able to angle.

I recommend that you live in Nagoya. If it is Takayama-shi Gifu Pref. as for you the job is not produced. Because it is 15 minutes by a car to the mountain stream. :-)

Please read following about salmon.
