| Ohtorigawa Riv. and Lake Ohtoriike
September, 1998 I have gone to the Asahi mountain range of Yamagata Pref. Here is the rare wilderness in Japan that equals the Shirakami mountainous region which is a world heritage. Here the virgin forest of the beech tree that is a defoliation broadleaf tree spreads. The highest peak does not fill with 2000m. However, here is shut with over 5m of snow in winter. |
| The overall length of many rivers of Japan is about 50km to 100km. Accordingly an inclination is strong, upstream department is a waterfall entirely. Here IWANA ( Char ) is inhabiting. YAMAME and AMAGO ( Landlocked salmon ) is inhabiting to the little more under valley. The trout of Japan was glued up the land in the ice age. The fluctuation of the earth's crust makes the waterfall and they were cut off the interchange with the sea. None the less the fish that goes to come back for Spawning, after it ran to the sea was inhabiting to a part of river. However, many rivers have been disrupted in a plural dam. Now the real wild trout has decreased very much. |
| A wild trout is inhabiting to Ohtorigawa Riv. that I did this time. This river is the model of the mountain stream of Japan. The typhoon passes the previous day and heavy rain fell. However, this river was becoming clear. |

| There is the natural lake called Lake Ohtoriike in the top valley, height above sea level of 1000m of this river. I walk the mountain path in the virgin forest for more than 3 hours to this lake. Ancient times in mountain collapsed once, and came a dam and stopped a valley. As for the lake of it flows out a waterfall is continuing. The advanced difference is 100m or more. The trouts of this lake were glued up the land completely. There is the legend that over 2m of huge fishes inhabit to this lake. He is called TAKITAROU. Actually IWANA of 1m was captured. |

I fished wild IWANA with the swamp that flows
in to this lake. Although it is inhabiting it to the same river their figure
differs. They jumped at a #10 terrestrial fly. I got excited very much. Many rivers of Japan are prohibition of fishery from October. I thank for them. And, I released them to a river. |
